2027 Toyota Sequoia: What’s New, Trims & Towing Overview

September 25th, 2026 by
2027 Toyota Sequoia full-size three-row SUV

Toyota has announced the 2027 Sequoia. Three changes lead the update. Every grade now gets a standard 14-inch multimedia display and Toyota Safety Sense 4.0. A Trailhunter package built on the SR5 grade is newly available. The full-size SUV keeps its three-row, body-on-frame build and its standard i-FORCE MAX hybrid engine.

One thing to know up front. Toyota has confirmed these 2027 changes, but they have not yet published full specs or pricing. Toyota says those details arrive closer to the start of production in fall 2026. Everything below splits what Toyota has confirmed for 2027 from what carries over from the 2026 Sequoia. You will know which is which.

What’s New for the 2027 Toyota Sequoia

Toyota’s 2027 Sequoia announcement covers styling, tech, safety and off-road gear. Here is what changes.

Standard 14-Inch Multimedia Display

The 2027 Sequoia standardizes a 14-inch screen across the lineup. On the 2026 model the base SR5 came with an 8-inch unit and the 14-inch display was reserved for higher grades, so this is a real upgrade at the entry point.

Latest Toyota Audio Multimedia

The new system integrates AT&T 5G connectivity, a smartphone-style home screen with customizable widgets and faster voice responses. A built-in Drive Recorder dash cam is now standard, capturing 20-second clips from the exterior cameras. Enhanced Digital Key is available, letting drivers lock, unlock and start the vehicle from a compatible phone’s digital wallet and share access with up to five additional drivers.

Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, Standard

Toyota describes the update as bringing improved hardware and detection capabilities. The suite includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Automatic High Beams, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist and Proactive Driving Assist.

Refreshed Front-End Design

Revised grille and bumper treatments, rectangular fog lights integrated into the bumper and an enhanced center lower bumper. On select grades, not across the whole lineup, Toyota has reworked the bright chrome finish. The grille-mounted LED light bar gets brighter output, and RIGID fog lights are available.

Driver-assistance and advanced safety systems are supplemental aids and are not substitutes for safe and attentive driving. Availability, operation, and effectiveness vary by trim and equipment and depend on factors including road, weather, traffic, and vehicle condition. Always keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. See your owner’s manual for system limitations and details.

2027 Toyota Sequoia Grades

The 2027 Sequoia comes in six grades: SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro and Capstone. Trailhunter is not a seventh grade. It is a package added to the SR5.

The Newly Available Trailhunter Package

The Trailhunter package is the biggest off-road news for 2027. It also answers a question shoppers keep asking. Does serious factory off-road gear mean stepping up to a top grade? It does not. Trailhunter is based on the SR5 grade. Here is what the package adds.

Michelin LTX Trail Tires

265/70R18 all-terrain tires.

Old Man Emu Suspension

Upgraded suspension for travel across more challenging terrain.

Front Recovery Hooks

Factory-fitted recovery points.

Underbody Protection

Additional protection for the vehicle’s underside.

Multi-Terrain Select

Surface-specific drive settings.

Crawl Control

Low-speed control in demanding overlanding conditions.

Locking Rear Differential

Added traction when grip runs out.

Bronze-Colored Wheels

Unique wheels exclusive to the package.

Exclusive Badging

Package-specific exterior badges.

Toyota aims the package at slow-speed overlanding. High-speed desert running is still the TRD Pro’s job.

TRD Pro Updates for 2027

The TRD Pro gets real hardware changes, not just a new color. Toyota has fitted newly designed, Sequoia-tuned FOX enhanced QS3 shocks. They are adjustable and tuned to improve feel, stability and control over rough ground. Red tow hooks are now standard. A new Honeycomb exterior color joins the palette. A TRD Performance package is available for buyers who want more hardware and tuning.

2027 Toyota Sequoia Towing

Toyota has not published 2027 towing ratings. Here is what is on record now, and what carries over.

Maximum Towing and the Setup That Reaches It

Toyota’s Sequoia model page lists the 2026 Sequoia at up to 9,500 pounds. That figure takes a properly equipped rear-wheel-drive SR5. Ratings step down from there as curb weight goes up with four-wheel drive and higher grades. The 2027 Sequoia keeps the same body-on-frame platform and the same standard hybrid powertrain, so the towing hardware carries over. The 2027 numbers are not final until Toyota releases them.

What the Tow Tech Package Does, and What It Does Not Do

Sequoia towing gear includes an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller and TOW/HAUL mode. The available Tow Tech Package adds Trailer Backup Guide and Straight Path Assist. It also adds a rear-camera mirror and a wireless trailer camera. One point is worth being clear about. Tow Tech is a steering and visibility aid. It makes hitching and backing easier. It does not change the tow rating.

Heavier Loads

The available Load-Leveling Rear Height Control Air Suspension helps with heavier loads. It keeps the truck level and the headlight aim correct under tongue weight. Maximum towing and payload capacity figures are based on properly equipped vehicles and vary by configuration. Do not exceed any weight rating. See your owner’s manual and the vehicle’s door-jamb label for specific capacities.

Powertrain and Fuel Economy

Toyota has not published 2027 powertrain or fuel-economy figures. The 2026 Sequoia’s numbers are below, per the EPA. Toyota’s announcement points to no powertrain change for 2027.

Specification 2026 Sequoia
Engine i-FORCE MAX 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid
Horsepower 437 hp
Torque 583 lb-ft
Transmission 10-speed automatic
Drivetrain Rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive
Hybrid Type Self-charging, no plug-in required

Every grade uses the same system. Straight-line performance is consistent across the lineup. An electric motor sits between the twin-turbo V6 and the 10-speed automatic. It fills the gaps in the power band. You get quick response off the line and steadier pull when loaded. The hybrid system is self-charging. It charges itself as you brake and as you drive, and never needs a plug. The same hybrid architecture appears in the 2026 4Runner i-FORCE MAX.

Drivetrain EPA-Estimated City EPA-Estimated Highway EPA-Estimated Combined
Rear-Wheel Drive (SR5, Limited) 21 MPG 24 MPG 22 MPG
Four-Wheel Drive 19 MPG 22 MPG 20 MPG

EPA-estimated fuel economy figures are for comparison purposes only. Your actual mileage will vary depending on driving conditions, how you drive and maintain your vehicle, battery age/condition, and other factors.

Ratings shown are 2026 Sequoia figures published by the EPA at fueleconomy.gov. Toyota confirms 2027 ratings in fall 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 2027 Toyota Sequoia require plug-in charging?

No. The Sequoia uses a self-charging hybrid system. The battery charges itself through braking and engine power as you drive. You never need to plug it into a wall outlet or a charging station.

What is the difference between the Trailhunter package and the TRD Pro?

The TRD Pro is a grade engineered for higher-speed off-road driving, and for 2027 it features Sequoia-tuned FOX enhanced QS3 adjustable shocks. Trailhunter is a package based on the SR5 grade, focused on slow-speed overlanding, with Old Man Emu upgraded suspension, Michelin LTX Trail tires, front recovery hooks, and additional underbody protection.

Is third-row seating standard on every 2027 Toyota Sequoia grade?

Yes. All Sequoia grades are three-row. Passenger capacity is eight with the second-row bench or seven with available second-row captain’s chairs.

What safety features come standard on the 2027 Toyota Sequoia?

Every 2027 Sequoia includes Toyota Safety Sense 4.0: Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Automatic High Beams, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, and Proactive Driving Assist.

Does the third-row seat fold flat into the floor?

The power third-row seats fold down and slide forward or back on a track rather than stowing completely flush with the floor. An adjustable cargo shelf system helps level the loading surface when the third row is down.
